UKPSC 2026 Complete Book List: Hindi & English Medium (Prelims + Mains)

A thousand people will recommend a thousand books. Most of them waste your time. The real reason candidates fail UKPSC isn't the wrong books — it's too many books. This list is built from direct experience: seven Mains attempts, four interviews, and a final score of 846/1650 with nearly 100 marks coming from the Uttarakhand-specific papers alone.

Coaching institutes hand out 30-book lists. Toppers typically clear the exam with about eight. Here's exactly what to read, subject by subject, and what to skip.

Why Most Book Lists Fail You

Most UKPSC content online is either incomplete or outdated against the 2026 syllabus pattern. Two mistakes are especially common:

Underestimating the Uttarakhand portion. Around 50 Prelims questions come directly from Uttarakhand GK, and Mains carries the full weight of GS5, GS6, plus a dedicated essay — all state-specific.
Directly pasting a UPSC-style approach onto UKPSC prep. The exam pattern is shifting toward more analytical, demand-based questions, which means rote memorization without applying facts in Uttarakhand's context won't score well.

CSAT (Paper 2)

CSAT is qualifying, but don't ignore it completely. Solve all available PYQs — UKPSC, plus relevant UPSC and UPPSC ones — and review basic mathematics formulas. If you're comfortable with these, you don't need dedicated CSAT books at all.

Uttarakhand History

Open University's Uttarakhand history text — your base, functioning like an NCERT for this section
Ajay Rawat's books — for deep analytical understanding and factual depth
Yashwant Katoch (optional substitute/supplement)

Don't just memorize dates — understand context: the colonial period's specific local issues, uprisings and their outcomes, key leaders and their organizations, and the role of princely states. These are asked directly in Mains, so check PYQs and align your reading accordingly.

Uttarakhand Geography

Khadakwal — your base text
Pariksha Vani — for rapid revision
Oxford Atlas — non-negotiable, used alongside Khadakwal to mark rivers, dams, and peaks (a Prelims question on the Girthi river was answered correctly only by those who'd actually marked rivers and tributaries on a map). Geography is a visual subject — map work is not optional.

Uttarakhand Culture

Don't just rote-learn cultural facts — connect them to current affairs. Festivals like Jhanda Fair, the Kedarnath Yatra, new initiatives like the Manaskhand Yojana, and the upcoming 2027 Nanda Devi Raj Yatra are all live, evolving topics. Link cultural elements to geography too — a festival or monument's cultural significance almost always connects back to a geographical feature.

Uttarakhand Economy

Himanshu Kapatia's book — written by a 2016 rank-one topper, well-aligned with the syllabus
Economic Survey (Uttarakhand) — essential for schemes, PPP projects, and data
Winsar's yearly compilation — strengthens the schemes and current-affairs angle
Pariksha Vani — quick revision

Candidates who cite specific data (GDP, growth rate, scheme names, budget figures) stand out to examiners — this is what separates a generic answer from a specific one.

National GS

History: NCERT (Class 6-12) is non-negotiable — direct questions come from it. As a strong equivalent, Tamil Nadu Class 11th History textbooks consolidate material well and are recommended over most random alternatives. For Modern History specifically, read the chapter summary first, then the full chapter — focus on pre-independence topics (national movements, social reform, constitutional developments); post-independence content overlaps with current affairs anyway.

Geography: NCERT Class 11th-12th, focusing on the first four chapters. Practice at least 10 minutes of India map work daily, plus a pass over South Asia, China, USA, Europe, and Africa maps.

Polity: Laxmikanth, read at least twice — first for understanding, second (and only then) for notes. Class 11th Political Theory is a useful optional add-on for the philosophical base. Use PYQs to identify high-frequency chapters — Emergency, Fundamental Rights, and High Court/Supreme Court-related chapters come up often.

Economy: NCERT basics (specific chapters like banking) followed by Mrunal's handouts, which are exhaustive and already pre-filtered for relevance. This combination covers most Prelims economy questions and gives strong Mains-answer content. Always review the Economic Survey (national and Uttarakhand) before the exam — it directly adds data-driven value to your answers.

Environment: Only the last four chapters of NCERT are non-negotiable; supplement with notes on pollution, biodiversity, and climate change from sources like Vision IAS or PMF IAS. This is a heavily current-affairs-driven subject — track climate summits and international agreements (a 2024 question referenced UNFCCC directly).

Science & Technology: Class 9th-10th NCERT basics if you can manage them, but don't over-invest if you're not from a science background — focus instead on current-affairs coverage of space, AI policy, defense technology, and initiatives like quantum technology.

Ethics

Lexicon — for building technical vocabulary rather than vague moral statements ("honesty is the best policy" type answers score poorly)
2nd ARC (Administrative Reforms Commission) — Chapter 4 specifically, on ethics in administration; quote it wherever relevant to boost answer credibility

Learn philosophical concepts like Kant's categorical imperative, Bentham's utilitarianism, Rawls' theory of justice, and Chanakya's Arthashastra concepts — weaving these into answers meaningfully improves quality. Memorize 10-15 vocabulary words daily from Lexicon, and prepare case studies directly from PYQs (both UPSC and state PCS).

Hindi

Aditya Publication — includes all PYQs, best for grammar practice
Hardev Bahari or Nalanda — either one for conceptual clarity

Practice writing formats for letters and reports (widely available online). The essay paper is a rank-decider that many candidates completely ignore — analyze topper essays specifically for how they structure introductions, paragraph flow, and conclusions. Prepare Uttarakhand-specific essay topics using AI tools, since essay themes tend to repeat. Write one practice essay weekly.

The Bottom Line

This list isn't exhaustive by design — it's deliberately minimal. Screenshot it or note it down, and start with whatever's currently missing from your preparation. With better presentation, writing speed, and answer-writing practice, the same sources that produced an 846 can realistically push toward 900+ across both Uttarakhand-specific papers.
